Icebreaker - April 8 & 9, 2006 The 2006 race season had a memorable send-off at Thompson International Speedway with a rain delay (or was it snow/sleet delay?) Saturday, April 08th. Even with the weather challenge, enthusiasm abounded. Two features were run on Saturday as well as some qualifying. Woody Pitkat’s #99 Sunoco Modified and Dave Trudeau’s #97 Late Model raced to a winning checkered flag on opening day of Thompson’s Icebreaker event. Whelen Modified tire scuffing opened Sunday’s race day. Forty six tour cars contended in time-trials for the 37 available Icebreaker 150 slots. Mini Stock’s made claim to the first feature, Brian Vincent taking the first place spot. Four additional track divisions and Sunoco Modifieds competed throughout the day with the Whelen Modified Tour cars rounding out an evening program of action-filled competition. Danny Cates, in the #26, finished first in the Limited Sportsman Division, #80 Roger Larson Jr. in Thompson’s Modified Division, #81 Todd Owen in Pro Stock’s and #36 Corey Hutchings in the weekends 2nd race for the Late Model Division. Todd Ceravolo #15 won the 2nd Sunoco Modified race of Icebreaker weekend. Mike Stefanik, in the # 16 owned by Chris Kopek, won the closely contended Whelen Modified 150. Chuck Hossfeld (2nd place) aggressively challenged Stefanik as did Reggie Ruggiero (“The Reg” in 3rd). The infamous Ted Christopher and 2005 Whelen defending series champion Tony Hirschman, finished 4th and 5th, completing yet another spectacular season opener. |
